Kanawa Island lies within Komodo National Park in the Flores Sea. Its main distinction is that the coral reef begins directly off the beach.
The island is widely included in Komodo day tours and liveaboard routes. It is best known for accessible snorkelling, short hill walks, and calm, shallow water.
This guide explains what makes Kanawa worth visiting and how to plan your journey properly.

Why Visit Kanawa Island
- Snorkelling Straight from the Shore
In many parts of Komodo National Park, snorkelling requires a boat drop-off over deeper water. On Kanawa, the reef begins directly off the beach.
Entry is shallow and gradual. Scuba certification is not required. Even cautious swimmers can access the reef comfortably.
- Two Distinct Beaches
Most boats arrive at Sunrise Beach on the island’s south side. It faces east and is great for early-morning snorkelling before the heat intensifies.
A short walk across the island leads to Sunset Beach on the north side. It receives fewer day visitors and offers a clear western view. This location makes it a practical late-afternoon stop.
- Close to Labuan Bajo, Yet Remote in Feel
Kanawa is about 15 kilometres from Labuan Bajo. Despite the short distance, it feels separate from the town.

Things to Do on Kanawa Island
- Snorkelling
The best area for snorkelling is near the pier, where fish gather in higher numbers. You can see reef fish, sea turtles, and occasionally baby blacktip reef sharks.
- Hilltop Walk
The hilltop walk offers open 360-degree views across the surrounding islands. A marked trail runs from Sunrise Beach to the island’s peak and continues toward Sunset Beach. The climb is short, but there is very little shade. Early morning and late afternoon are the most comfortable times to walk.
- Walking the Perimeter
Walking the island’s perimeter is the simplest way to explore beyond the main beach. Much of the shoreline is accessible during low tide. The full loop takes under an hour.

How to Get to Kanawa Island
Fly to Labuan Bajo
The nearest airport is Komodo Airport (LBJ) in Labuan Bajo. The airport is about 10-15 minutes from the harbour. Most travellers arrive via Bali. Direct flights also connect from Jakarta.
Boat Transfer
From Labuan Bajo Marina, a speedboat takes around 30 minutes to reach Kanawa Island. Traditional wooden boats take 45 to 60 minutes and are common on shared tours.
Most shared Komodo day tours include Kanawa as the final stop before returning to Labuan Bajo. It is also commonly included in 3-day, 2-night liveaboard itineraries.
Note: If possible, reach the island before 9:00 AM. There are fewer boats at the jetty and less crowding in the water.

Best Time to Visit Kanawa Island
The dry season (April to December) is the best time to visit Kanawa Island. The sea is calmer, and boat tours operate more consistently.
Underwater visibility is often strongest between September and November. July and August are peak travel months.
January and February bring heavier rain and rougher seas. Snorkelling visibility drops during this period, and tours are occasionally cancelled.

Essential Tips for Visiting Kanawa Island
- Bring Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) from Labuan Bajo. There are no ATMs on Kanawa Island, and boat operators or small vendors do not accept cards. Since March 2025, there has been no entry fee to Kanawa Island. You need to pay the Komodo National Park fee.
- Carry at least 1.5 to 2 litres of water per person if it is not included in your tour. Shade is limited, and there are no shops to buy additional supplies.
- Wear water shoes when entering the water to avoid sea urchins’ sharp spines that can puncture the skin. It is painful, not life-threatening. But it can end your swim immediately and disrupt the rest of the day.
- Use reef-safe sunscreen to protect coral. Regular sunscreen contains chemicals that damage marine life.
- Check current conditions with your boat crew before swimming. Tides and light currents can change quickly in Komodo National Park.
- Buy a Telkomsel SIM card for the most reliable mobile signal.
- Visit on a weekday if possible for a quieter experience. Shared day tours are more frequent on weekends.

Where to Stay When Visiting Kanawa Island
There is currently no functioning resort accommodation on Kanawa Island. You can stay in Labuan Bajo or explore the park on a liveaboard.
Labuan Bajo
Use Labuan Bajo as your base if you prefer day trips and flexible planning. The town offers budget guesthouses, mid-range hotels, and upscale resorts within walking distance of the harbour. Staying in town allows you to compare operators, adjust schedules, and return comfortably after a day tour.
Liveaboard Phinisi Boats and Yachts
Choose a liveaboard if you want to explore multiple islands without returning to port each day. A 3-day, 2-night itinerary is common in Komodo National Park. Kanawa often serves as a relaxed final stop before returning to Labuan Bajo. You wake near the islands and avoid repeated transfers back to the harbour. Choose from a wide range of sailing options, from budget to luxury Indonesian yacht charters.
